Celeste Seitz shared about the Enso design for our March meeting. She discussed the history behind the design and the traditional materials used. Art Club members were invited to create their own ink and everyone had the opportunity to create an Enso before and after a meditation exercise. The current president, Beth Mortenson, introduced the slate of candidates for the 2023-2024 Art Club Board.
Karren Case spoke to the members this month about the art of the continuous line or what she likes to call "Drunk Drawing". Karren demonstrated several different levels of continuous line drawings and then turned the program over to hands on experience. Members were encouraged to draw each other without looking at the paper and in a time limit of 2 minutes. Everyone went home with a unique piece of art and had a wonderful time.
Cindy Gilstrap was our speaker for our September meeting. She shared with us all of the fun ways to play with art in a journal. She shared techniques and ideas and inspired us to try something new!
Our 2022-2023 Kickoff event was a huge success! The room was full of artists - all of which had the opportunity to showcase some of the pieces they had worked on over the summer. We saw everything from photography, to paintings, to hand-embroidery, to hand-carved bird houses! The breadth of talent in the McKinney Art Club is astounding - and the members are lots of fun as well!
Jenny Mathison-Foster of Bay Willow Design was our speaker in March. As part of her presentation, everyone in attendance got to make their own fascinator. All participants received a pre-made sinamay swirl base and a variety of trimmings to add to their bases. Jenny provided plenty of trim to pick from as well as ribbon, flowers, buttons, feathers, etc. Now we just need a tea party!
Our November club "come and go" event generated over 100 handmade cards by club members. Some stopped by to create, others stopped by to drop off. Tables were set up and hosted by Board members to get the creative process flowing. Cards will be delivered to a local assisted living/memory care facility. We also collected cans and packaged food items for a local food bank.
A huge thank you to all who contributed.
In October, our members were treated to a delightful (sometimes cheeky) and informative program presented by Dustin Ferris, owner of Art and Antiques Restoration. We learned about his personal journey, the business he took over from his grandfather, and (of course) restoration techniques. We learned a lot, we laughed... a lot.
Due to an unexpected turn of events, we had to move our meeting from inside to the courtyard! However, it actually turned out to be quite nice being outside for this program. Local artist Cate Robbins led members through completing a small painting only using torn pieces of paper from magazines. It was fun, it was interesting, it was sticky, it was meditative!
The Art Club of McKinney is a group of art lovers who love to share art together. We are an eclectic assortment of ages, personalities, and art styles who fit together to create a fun and inspiring group! Join us for our next event - we would love to meet you!
